pDCDM: Shrink the size of D-Cinema image masters by half!

pDCDM: Shrink the size of D-Cinema image masters by half!

For years, image DCDMs have been exchanged as uncompressed TIFF files. This results in terabyte packages that clog workflows.

Building on experience with recent titles, SMPTE is standardizing the lossless compression of individual DCDM image frames using JPEG 2000. The technique reduces file sizes by a factor of 2, while preserving both the information contained in the DCDM and current workflow practices. Recent JPEG 2000 improvements makes the technique super fast.

The proposed SMPTE standard, called Packed Image DCDM (pDCDM), is open for public comments until 2024-01-01.
